about

Sadistic Tendencies was the first Rude 66 album since the last ones on the ‘old’ Bunker Records 027 and 028 more than 10 years before: from 1997 on I only made EP’s. A lot of things had changed since then: My studio got a lot bigger, I had a bit more of an idea what I was doing, and the biggest change was Shaunna’s input as vocalist, making the tracks no longer purely instrumental.

So in 2007 and 2008, we set to work on what would become Sadistic Tendencies. The first tracks were released as singles: As and The 1000 Year Storm. These appeared in shorter versions on the original album. The idea behind the record was at first a concept album about “serial killers”, but soon expanded into “what happens in the human brain to make people do these things”? So while there are examples of real-life stories in tracks like Horrified, The Human Flesh and Blood is Blood, tracks like Massenmorder exploit the deeper thinking behind the acts and asks the uncomfortable questions: could we all become animals without morals? Is our civilization just a thin layer of chrome that can be polished away quite easily?

Musically the album is somewhere on the crossroads of acid, Italo, wave and a soundtrack to a non-existing film. The idea was that while several tracks are definitely dance floor material, there should also be enough to listen to in a home setting. These tracks also have a bit more of a downtempo feel. It was a challenge to combine all these different styles into one consistent album, but looking back on it, I think we did okay. Godspill did the awesome cover artwork, and my then neighbor Rutger photographed our VW bus with our equipment and cat Max on the back cover, inspired by Pink Floyd’s famous Ummagumma back sleeve.

What you get here is the 2017 version of Sadistic Tendencies. This means the full versions of the tracks that were edited to fit on the vinyl (Angst Bleibt, 1000 Year Storm, As) and all tracks are completely remastered. Or I should really say “mastered” as the originals were pretty much thrown on vinyl without much any additional processing. You also get 2 additional bonus tracks: the original version of The Kill, which was intended for this album but rejected and only appeared on some cd-r promo versions. Later it became part of the EP on Bordello A Parigi. The other extra track is an alternate version of Angst Bleibt, which I dug up from my DAT-archives.
