about

The As EP was originally released by Creme Org. in 2008 on vinyl. It was, like The 1000 Year Storm, a track that was originally on the Sadistic Tendencies 2LP.
Unlike Storm this one was a bit more mellow and dark, so the idea came about to have someone remix it.
I have done plenty of remixes myself and always enjoy making them for others, but I had no idea what I should do with this one. Have someone turn it into a club banger? A piece of experimental electronics? Have it played by a string quartet?
The idea of some dj friendly remix didn’t appeal to me at all, and in the end I had no idea who could give this track something extra that it didn’t have.

That week, I received an lp in the mail by Frenchman Nicolas Courtin, whose tracks I had heard on I-f’s CBS online radio station and I loved them. The LP itself was a disappointment: not because of the tracks which were amazing, but something went wrong with the pressing and it sounds like it’s out of phase. I talked about it a few times with Nicolas via the mail, and suddenly it occurred to me that what he did on his album (electronics with guitars and vocals in french) was exactly what would fit As.
I asked him to do a remix and he accepted the challenge. As payment, we agreed not to money but I would come and DJ at one of his parties in Lille, Northern France.

Nicolas delivered not one, but two remixes that had everything I asked for: the original electronics by me, and his guitar playing and half spoken, half sung almost Gainsbourg-like delivery in French. Perfect! After the record was released, me and I-f went to Lille to play at one of Courtin’s parties, and had a blast. Nicolas himself also played a set, I was amazed to see a vintage Polymoog on stage but it turned out it was broken he only used it was a table. One of those details you always remember.
Unfortunately, Nicolas Courtin never released another record. I remember talking to him a few times: he was a doctor in the North of France, and simply did not have more time for music.

This digital release is remastered from the original tapes and has 2 additional bonus tracks: The second remix by Nicolas Courtin that was never used for the EP, and a very early instrumental demo version found on a cassette tape.
